We are now in the sun sign of Sagittarius (November 23 – December 22). Sagittarius is represented by Temperance in the tarot (Major Arcana, #14)*. Temperance is often called “Art” in modern tarot decks. The card means moderation and bringing elements together. I like to explain Temperance like this:
“You have an artist, a canvas, a palette, paints and brushes. Separately, they are not a piece of art. Bring all of those elements together, and you can create a wondrous work of art. Too much of one thing can ruin the piece though, so moderation and thought must be used when bringing all elements together.”
During the time of Sagittarius, we strive for balance because things seem to be coming at us from all sides (think about all those winter holidays we plan for from Thanksgiving to Hanukkah, to Christmas). During this period, we try to bring family and community together, though some will carry heavier burdens than others.
For those born under the sign of Sagittarius (and the card of Temperance), the following characterization will likely apply. From my book “Personalities of the Tarot (A Guide to Know Thyself through Astrology and Tarot)”:
- Moderation, avoiding excess, compromise
- Balance, equilibrium, harmony, centered
- Combination, joining with others, consolidating, the “right mix”
Temperance indicates that compromise and cooperation are vital components for balance. You may try new things while maintaining present security. You are probably able to work in harmony with others because you can adapt to new circumstance through a tempered nature.
If the negative side of the card is manifested, you may feel anxious and lacking in purpose or vision which, in turn, will block your moderate nature. You may feel overly-competitive and somewhat out of balance with yourself and/or others. Remember that patience and cooperation are an important component of a well-balanced nature.
