We are now in the sun sign of Capricorn (December 23 – January 19). This sign is represented by The Devil in the Tarot (Major Arcana, #15)*. The Devil is often called “Materialism” in modern tarot decks. The card means obsession, enslavement and overindulgence. I find the card fits into the time period perfectly with the modern materialism and excesses of the winter holidays. Overindulgence, and consequently forgetting the spiritual side of life, needn’t be a permanent manifestation of our existence. It’s OK to indulge as long as we remember to balance those indulgences with a sense of knowledge, positivity and enlightenment. You must look for the spiritual path behind appearances, and stop misusing energy.
For those born under the sign of Capricorn, the following characterization will likely apply. Most Capricorns, by their very nature, tend to be quite empathetic and creative (in general, they don’t tend to be very devilish – at least not on purpose). From my book “Personalities of the Tarot (A Guide to Know Thyself through Astrology and Tarot)”:
- Bondage, addiction, enslavement, obsession
- Materialism, overindulging the senses, ignoring spirituality
- Ignorance, fear, being unaware
- Hopelessness, lacking faith, despair, doubt
The Devil is the card of overindulgence, and those born under it have the ability to create a miserable existence through a chronic desire for material gain. If you are born under this card, you will probably expend great effort to achieve success. The Devil has tremendous willpower and deep-seated spiritual insight which may get overlooked in the quest for material gain. He also tends to have an ironic wisdom and sense of humor. His wisdom is often gained through negative experience; though, he must learn at some point in his life not to misuse his strong energy.
It is when you turn from this spiritual side that a darker aspect of this card can lead you off track putting you in unhealthy, unproductive situations. The Devil may use trickery to achieve his wants and desires, but in the end, he will find that materialism lacks in spiritual and emotional understanding.
