I’ve written about my lament of Mercury Retrograde (MR) quite a bit, and it seems every time that planet appears to move backward in our earthly sky, something will go amiss. Whether it’s communication, transportation or electronics going haywire, Mercury Retrograde can be a seasonal issue for many people. I work in travel tech for my day job, and I’ve definitely noticed that during MR periods, calls for assistance increase exponentially for online booking tool issues and general problems with travel reservations.
Our buddy closest to the sun can really cause problems when he seems to reverse his movement. In the past, I’ve made the mistake of beginning something new during his backward phase, and I’ve ended up with issues or problems every single time. My longevity with new employers, where I’ve begun a new job during MR, has always been relatively non-existent; months at best. But, one day after the first MR of 2015 began, I signed new-hire paperwork for a part-time job at the airport although that hot blue planet was dancing backward in our sky. I crossed my fingers that everything would work out okay, and I pushed forward with the new endeavor anyway. Why did I think it would work out that time under Mercury’s backward gaze although history should’ve encouraged me to be much more cautious? It was because I was revisiting a similar position, in a similar location I’d held before. I had worked for an airline at the airport for a few years along with being a travel agent for several years after that. I was also going to work with my partner at the time, and we’d previously worked together in Hawaii, proving to be a great team. That job, although temporary, actually worked out quite well for me.
While it’s good advice that you shouldn’t begin anything new in MR, it’s a wonderful time to revisit past projects, or pick something up again. Oftentimes, you will have learned many things between then and now, so you approach the old/new activity with fresh eyes and a different attitude. If you have plans, goals or dreams which have been sitting on the back burner, MR periods are a perfect time to revisit them, using the mental acuity which Mercury is known for. You can restructure your thoughts and beliefs, creating something new from that which already exists!
So now I call Mercury retrograde the “RE Time”. While we typically don’t want to begin anything new, make big decisions, sign contracts, purchase big ticket items, plan or actively travel long-distance, we should use the time to revisit, revise, review, restructure, reread, redo, rediscover, regain, readjust, rearrange… you get the idea. Just RE!
